FundBuilder Software . . .
Helping mutual fund investors succeed with winning investment management information!

Step 1: "Begin with the end in mind" . . . define the goal
The first step in implementing a FundBuilder directed investment portfolio involves the insight of Steven Covey, Ph.D. as presented in his book, Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, "begin with the end in mind." Targets and goals are necessary in order to measure our progress and investment success. The philosophy and technology behind FundBuilder is designed to keep you focused on your investment goals. The message of FundBuilder Software is that it will help you turn "today's dreams into tomorrow's reality."

To assist investors in defining their goals, FundBuilder Software incorporates two different investment-planning calculators. The FundBuilder planning wizard allows you to consider any number of different scenarios as you define and quantify an investment plan. You can create and manage any number of plans. Your plans can be designed to accumulate a capital account (to finance a future goal such as a college education or retirement) or manage the "nest-egg" which generates your retirement income and preserves your capital.

FundBuilder Software© is an Internet-based, goal-focused mutual fund portfolio management system that incorporates a variety of technologies. As a FundBuilder user, you will be led through a fourteen-step investment-planning wizard that assists you in defining your specific investment goal(s). This process identifies the cash flow elements that impact the account you need to save and earn (i.e. amount and timing of contributions, fund performance, and length of time before you need the investment to mature). The rate of return necessary for the account to reach the desired value by the date of anticipated need is then calculated and presented [as noted below].

There are many voices in the marketplace. It can be easy for investors to get distracted by these voices and lose sight of their investment goal in a quest for the latest investment fad or hot fund.

FundBuilder focuses your attention on your progress towards specific investment goals, as opposed to the performance of the financial markets. Ultimately, we don't care what happens to the Dow or S&P 500. All that matters is whether we reach our goal(s)! Goals may involve saving for the future (i.e. college or retirement), or managing the income from a retirement account.

Step 2: Select funds that can hit the target
Once your goal(s) have been defined, the mutual funds being considered for investment are analyzed and ranked according to their Performance Index Value (PIV). This PIV [as noted by the arrow below] corresponds to the fund's demonstrated ability (past performance) to perform at a level that will satisfy the specific investment goal and is presented across a variety of short, intermediate and long-term time periods. A PIV of 1.0 or greater is required to reach your personal investment target. You can evaluate and select from over 7,500 major mutual funds through the automated connection with the FundBuilder Technology Internet-site.

FundBuilder Software© presents precise information about the performance history of the funds being considered for your portfolio. This presentation includes detail of the fund's growth, during the past fifteen (15) years, as well as its payout history. The pie chart illustrates the composition of the account at the end of the goal, based on the fund's performance during the selected time frame.

FundBuilder Software© removes the guesswork associated with mutual fund selection. The information and analysis presented in FundBuilder is designed to enhance investor confidence, and to confirm that you are on track to make your financial dreams come to life!

FundBuilder Software© is a goal-oriented management system designed to take advantage of the Internet. When using the software you will access routine data, analysis elements and product upgrades via an automated Internet connection. A simple click on the "Update" button that appears on the main screen imports the latest data into your portfolio. Fund information, including net asset values, capital gain distributions, dividends and corrections, is immediately downloaded via an automated Internet connection.

A comprehensive presentation of the status of the funds in the portfolio is also a simple mouse click away. A reminder to make any periodic contribution included in the definition of your goal is also included [as noted by the arrow below].

You may also access your portfolio's allocation according to the fund's investment objective. While the investor is responsible for determining the portfolio allocation, the account management suggestions periodically generated by FundBuilder are designed to maintain the allocation you define.

Step 3: Monitor the growth . . . keep on target
FundBuilder continues to monitor the progress of the account during the life of the investment goal. Each time you update your information, FundBuilder analyzes the value of the account relative to the investment target. This constant monitoring provides investors with peace of mind because our interests are being watched.

During the course of every investment plan investors are confronted with changing circumstances. At the end of FundBuilder's routine analysis, you are presented with a report indicating progress toward each investment goal. As certain parameters are met, FundBuilder presents specific suggestions that provide direction throughout your investment plan. The recommendations presented correspond to the state of the investment account and whether the account is "On target with the investment goal", "Over-funded relative to the investment goal," or "Currently under-funded relative to the investment goal."

When the account is "On target with the investment goal", this is the message you receive. No further account management recommendations are issued.

In the event the account is "Over-funded relative to the investment goal", a recommendation will be generated directing you to move a specific portion of the portfolio "out of harm's way" into an associated interest bearing account.

Should the account become "Currently under-funded relative to the investment goal", you are presented three courses of action:
  1. Take no action and continue under-funded for the present time.
  2. Transfer $xx.xx from the associated interest bearing account or out of pocket to bring the account value back on target.
  3. As this fund's performance may no longer be compatible with the investment goal, revisit the fund selection wizard to see whether FundBuilder has identified a replacement fund. (After 90 days of sub-par performance)

FundBuilder's account reallocation recommendations are designed to keep the account on target with the investment goal and maintain the defined account allocation. An illustration of the impact these suggestions can have on an investment account is presented in the next section, "The FundBuilder Edge". Please note that FundBuilder only generates suggestions, you have the final decision concerning account management decisions.
